Do Computers Cause Eye Damage?

Is blue light coming from computers harmful for your eyes? Do computers cause eye damage?

Blue light blocking glasses have recently become very popular which are supposed to filter blue light coming from smart phones, tablets and computer screens in order to prevent harmful effects. Promotional materials and news reports about these glasses claim that blue light is harmful and should be blocked. Despite the assertions that blue light causes eye strain and even damages the retina, there are currently no scientific studies that support the idea that blue light coming from computer screens causes retinal damage. Therefore, we do not recommend the use of blue light blocking glasses while using a computer. Working on a computer for long periods of time will cause eye strain but not any organic ocular diseases. In order to relieve eye strain, for every 20 minutes spent using a screen, you should blink your eyes 20 times. This will help spread tears over your eyes to prevent drying, and further, provide some rest to your eyes.

Please always remember the 20/20 rule ….
